Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier is a historical novel that offers a fictional interpretation of the creation of one of the most iconic paintings in the world — Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer.

Set in 1664 in Delft, the story follows Griet — a sixteen-year-old girl from a poor family who begins working as a maid in Vermeer’s household. Her task is to clean his studio — a space that quietly awakens in her a deep and instinctive appreciation for art.

Over time, a complex and unspoken connection develops between Griet and Vermeer. Her silent intuition allows her to understand the language of painting in ways that unsettle the fragile balance within the household. Suspicion grows in the mind of Vermeer’s wife, Catharina, while the painter’s influential patron, Van Ruijven, introduces a more dangerous tension.

When circumstances force Griet to pose for one of Vermeer’s most famous works, she is drawn into a moment that will define her life — a quiet crossing between observation and participation, between invisibility and presence.

Chevalier has shared that the inspiration for the novel came from a poster of the painting that hung in her home for years. In an interview, she recalls:

“I looked at it and thought, ‘My goodness, she is striking.’ The next day, I went out and bought the poster.”

From the very beginning, the author knew the story was not meant to belong to the painter:

“I didn’t want it to be about Vermeer — I wanted it to be about her. I wanted her to have a voice and a story — something she had never been given before.”

The novel has been widely praised for its poetic language and its attention to historical detail. It became an international bestseller and received several literary nominations. In 2003, it was adapted into a film starring Scarlett Johansson as Griet and Colin Firth as Vermeer.

Girl with a Pearl Earring is an elegant and deeply evocative work — a meditation on the relationship between artist and muse, on the tension between art and silence, and on the quiet force of social boundaries.

Through Griet’s eyes, Chevalier invites us to look beyond the frame of a masterpiece — and to ask a question that lingers long after the final page:

Who is the woman behind that still, knowing gaze?
