Never Flinch by Stephen King is the fourth novel featuring private investigator Holly Gibney as its central protagonist. This time, Holly becomes entangled in two dangerous and interconnected cases — one involving a deceptive serial killer, and another centered around protecting a feminist activist targeted by a disturbing campaign of harassment.

In Buckeye City, detective Izzy Jaynes receives a chilling letter at the police station:

“Thirteen innocents and one guilty must die.”

Fearing the sender is planning a mass murder, she turns to Holly for help.

At the same time, outspoken feminist activist Kate McKay is preparing for a national speaking tour when she becomes the target of an obsessive stalker. Kate hires Holly as her bodyguard — a difficult assignment given her client’s stubborn personality and the fanaticism of the man pursuing her, fueled by what he sees as righteous anger.

These parallel storylines, populated by memorable and deeply human characters — some familiar to longtime readers, others entirely new — gradually collide in explosive fashion. Among them are world-famous singer Sista Bessie and a chilling killer obsessed with violence, all leading toward a climax only Stephen King could deliver.

Dedicated fans of the King of Horror will already know that Holly Gibney first appeared in The Outsider. Readers attached to the character may also appreciate King’s own thoughts about her:

“I’m very happy to see Holly becoming more confident. She never entirely outgrows her insecurity. Neither do we.”

As he shared in an interview with Associated Press.

From BOOKLOVERS’ perspective, Never Flinch will undoubtedly appeal to readers who enjoy crime fiction layered with psychological tension and morally complex characters.

And if you’re still unsure, even The New York Times praised the novel, noting:

“The style is cinematic, and the critique of performative virtue works well in tying together the scattered threads.”
